Why Barefoot? Why Sunlight, Wind and Flowers Against Your Skin Matter

There is another reason I created Barefoot Blooms™️ to happen outside whenever possible.

I want you to feel nature, not simply look at it.

Shoes come off.

Your feet touch the earth.

The sun touches your skin.

You notice the breeze moving across your body.

Your hands aren’t wearing gloves. They are actually touching stems, petals, leaves and natural materials.

You smell the flowers.

You hear the sounds around you.

For a little while, you aren’t staring at nature through a window or scrolling past a beautiful picture of it.

You are physically inside the experience.

And science is beginning to give us some fascinating insight into why these sensory experiences with nature can feel so restorative.

The Science of Being Outside in Nature

Research on nature exposure has found measurable associations with psychological well-being. A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis examining nature exposure found an overall beneficial effect on well-being, with exposure to real nature showing a significant benefit. Other systematic reviews have found that structured outdoor nature-based activities can improve mood and reduce anxiety and negative affect. (ScienceDirect)

That matters to Barefoot Blooms™️.

I didn’t want to create an experience where you sit inside under fluorescent lights and simply assemble flowers.

I wanted you outside.

I want you to notice the warmth of the sun.

Feel the wind.

Hear the birds.

Smell the earth.

Touch the flowers.

Feel the ground beneath you.

These sensations bring your attention back to what is happening right now.

Why We Take Our Shoes Off

For Barefoot Blooms™️, removing our shoes is first and foremost an intentional grounding ritual.

The moment the shoes come off, something changes.

You become aware of where you’re standing.

Grass feels different from soil. Warm earth feels different from cool earth. Suddenly your feet are receiving sensations that shoes normally block.

Scientifically, it is important to make a distinction here. There are popular claims that direct barefoot contact with the earth, sometimes called “earthing,” produces specific electrical or medical benefits. Research in this area is still limited, and I don’t believe we need to make medical promises to understand why being barefoot can be meaningful.

For Barefoot Blooms™️, barefoot means presence.

It’s a physical cue to slow down.

To notice.

To stop rushing.

To reconnect with your senses and the natural environment around you.

And that is exactly where I want you before we begin creating.

Let the Sun Find You

Natural daylight is another part of the experience.

Sunlight is one of the environmental signals involved in regulating our body’s circadian rhythm, our internal system that helps coordinate sleep and wakefulness.

Research examining sunlight, green space and mental health has also found associations between sunlight and outdoor green-space exposure and better mental-health outcomes, although sunlight is only one piece of a much larger picture. (DOI)

In Barefoot Blooms™️, I’m not asking anyone to bake in the sun.

I’m asking you to notice it.

Feel a little warmth on your shoulders.

See what natural light does to the color of a rose.

Watch shadows move across the flowers.

Become aware that you’re outside and part of the environment rather than separated from it.

And Then There Is the Wind

I love the wind during Barefoot Blooms™️.

A breeze moves the flowers.

It moves your hair.

It moves the floral mobile you’re creating.

You can’t control it.

And that’s almost the point.

There isn’t strong scientific evidence that “wind” by itself creates a specific therapeutic effect. What research does support more broadly is the value of multisensory exposure to real natural environments. (ScienceDirect)

For me, the wind becomes part of the meditation.

You don’t control every breeze.

You don’t control every flower.

And you certainly don’t control everything that happens in life.

Sometimes you surrender and allow things to move.

Breathe it in. Let it move through you. Let it go.

Touch the Flowers With Your Bare Hands

This might be my favorite part.

No barrier between you and the flowers.

Your fingers feel the softness of a petal.

The coolness of a stem.

The texture of a leaf.

The difference between something delicate and something strong.

And there is actual research investigating what happens when humans physically touch living plants.

A 2025 study measured psychological and physiological responses while participants touched different types of plant foliage. Participants reported greater relaxation, comfort and favorable responses with certain plant textures, particularly smooth and soft foliage, and researchers also observed differences in prefrontal brain activity. Earlier research similarly found evidence of a physiological calming response while people touched natural plant foliage. (PubMed)

Research on horticultural activities is fascinating too.

In one experiment, people recovering from a stressful task spent 30 minutes either gardening outdoors or reading indoors. Both groups experienced reductions in cortisol, but the decrease was significantly greater after gardening, while positive mood was restored in the gardening group. (PubMed)

Another study comparing work with real flowering plants with artificial flowers found that horticultural activity was associated with more comfortable, soothed and natural feelings. (PubMed Central (PMC))

Even simply viewing flowers has been studied. Researchers found that looking at flower imagery after psychological stress was associated with reductions in negative emotion, blood pressure and cortisol responses. (ScienceDirect)

Imagine what happens when we go beyond simply looking.

At Barefoot Blooms™️, you are seeing, smelling, touching and creating with flowers while breathing, slowing down and spending time outdoors.

That’s why I believe the hands matter.

Barefoot Blooms™️ Is a Multisensory Flower Meditation

Barefoot Blooms™️ isn’t based on the idea that one flower, one breath or five minutes barefoot will magically change your life.

It is about creating the conditions where you can finally become quiet enough to hear yourself.

Your bare feet feel the earth.

Your skin feels the sun and breeze.

Your nose smells the flowers.

Your hands touch the stems and petals.

Your eyes take in color.

Your ears hear the natural environment.

Your breath slows.

Your phone isn’t demanding your attention.

And then I ask you:

What do you want?

Not what are you afraid of.

Not what happened yesterday.

Not what somebody else wants for you.

What do YOU want to create?

Then I give you the flower meanings.

We create your Flower Prescription.

You choose the flowers that speak to your intention.

And with your own two hands, you begin building your floral mobile.

That’s when Barefoot Blooms™️ moves from meditation into manifestation.

You are taking something that existed only as a thought and physically creating something that represents it.

Think it.
Declare it.
Feel it.
Touch it.
Create it.
Own it.

Then surrender.

Let the wind catch your flowers.

Let the sunlight move across them.

Let your bare feet remind you where you are.

Right here.

Right now.

And then?

BAM.

Watch what happens next.

That is the magic of Barefoot Blooms™️.
